背景介绍:

Recently, a remarkable dispute between Nongfu Spring and Beijing times about 'Water standard' has captured the public`s attention. On May 7th, Nongfu Spring, one of China's largest water producers, said that it is going to sue the Beijing Times for multiple news reports that its products fail to meet national standards. However, the Beijing Times insisted that reports about the water quality are "factual" and "well-grounded. " I have no intetion of discussing who is right or wrong in this case. This controversy, however, reminds me of the issue of 'Meida ethics'. Are the Medias always playing a righteous role in the public?

话题:

1 What`s your opinion towards this dispute?
2 How to find a balance between media`s free speech right and ethical regulation?
In other words, how to prevent the media from abusing its speaking right?
3 What roles do you think the media plays in our daily life?
4 Do you believe what the media reports? Why or why not?
5 Do you think the media should be fully entitled to right of free speech?

范例1:

The media plays a crucial role in the era of information explosion as it is the carrier of vast information. However, although media is supposed to investigate and uncover the hidden truth to the public, some media, even the prestigious ones, fail to use their right of free speech properly. In order to capture the public`s attention and increase their circulations, some of them tend to exaggerate their reports, which is appalling and unacceptable to the readers. Not only do such behavior break the moral standard, but also exert a profound negative influence--individuals would never believe whatever the media reports. Loyalty to the truth should be the paramount principle to the media with no exception, which is the very way to tackle such problem.

范例2:

As can be seen, China is opening up from human rights to media censorships. With the introduction of the Internet, it has become a pivotal platform of anti-corruption and public supervision. Some people reckon it as the development of freedom of speech. However, if we don’t restrict any behaviours of traditional or Internet Medias, negative impacts will ensue.
The news coverage has its own limitation. A variety of external and internal pressures influence journalists’ decisions on which stories are covered, how issues are interpreted and the emphasis given to them. These pressures can sometimes lead to bias or unethical reporting, which might sway public opinions. Take Li Qiming’s Case for example, later investigations revealed that he didn’t say that famous sentence ‘My father is Li Gang.’ But the journalists knew that what kind of reports could capture public attention as well as boost newspaper’s circulation. Therefore, Li, to some extent, became the victim of ‘Media Violence’. In the dispute between Nongfu Spring and Beijing News, I have no intention to judge right or wrong. But this controversy indicates the possibility of abusing the speaking rights of Medias. The media has often claimed that the public has the right to know, but they do not limit that right to know to a certain area of public concern.
Protecting Medias’ speaking rights or giving proper regulations to the Medias is a big problem. Government, in my opinion, needs to strike a balance between them. Maybe the government should focus on which news is partial instead of what kind of news can be reported, and make sure all the medias that revealed a bias news will be punished.
