Sunday is the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month which Chinese call Xiaonian or Preliminary Eve.

On this day, people used to offer sacrifices to the kitchen god. Now, most families make delicious food to enjoy. In some parts of China, people clean inside and outside their homes as well as their clothes and bedclothes.

People also maintain a tradition of cutting their hair on this day. After the Preliminary Eve, people begin preparing for the Chinese New Year. This is called "Seeing the New Year in".

They begin decorating their newly cleaned rooms to create an atmosphere of festivity. Chinese characters or Chinese gods are hung on doors before everybody goes out to buy things for the New Year.
