September 7th, 1977 - Panama Gets Control of Canal.

The Panama Canal, 50 miles of waterway connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, was hailed as a wonder of U.S. technology when completed in 1913. With its system of massive locks, the canal saved ships 8,000 miles of travel between the east and west coasts of the United States. Teddy Roosevelt was quick to ratify a treaty when Panama succeeded from Columbia in 1903. The U.S. obtained a 10-mile wide strip called the Canal Zone, in which it retained military control. And so it stood until President Carter signed a new treaty on September 7th, 1977, arranging to have Panama take control of the canal in 1999. Panama agreed to maintain a neutral military status in the canal zone.
