This Day in History - Aug 25th Starring - Paris

From the chateau de Rambouillet, General Charles DeGaulle secretly order General Jacques LeClerc to ignore the higher Allied command if neccessary and march on Paris. On August 25, 1944, Leclerc armoured division entered Paris followed by the U.S. 4th Infantry Division. Nazi resistance was light and a quick surrender was negotiated by German General Von Choltiz, who ignored orders from Adolf Hitler to burn the city to the ground. A day later, a triumphant De Gaulle led the joyous liberation march. Grand as the occasion was, Allied commanders Eisenhower and Bradley had hoped to save precious time and fuel. Bradley estimated that the Paris liberation may have cost the Allies two weeks in their primary goal of defeating Germany.
