China is marking its first National Low-carbon Day, in a fresh move to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the world’s second-largest economy.

Various exhibitions and campaigns were held across the country, promoting awareness about climate change and low-carbon development policies. Activities also took place in communities to encourage public participation and facilitate the country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The idea to establish a low-carbon day comes at a time when China is working hard to fulfil its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Chinese government has pledged to cut energy use per unit of GDP by 16 percent from the level of 2011, by 2015.
