On June 4th, 1940, Dunkirk is evacuated.

British and French troops were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk in France after the sudden surrender by Belgium's King Leopold II, allowed Nazi panzer divisions to break the Allied front in late May of 1940. A massive naval evacuation was promptly improvised in which more than 338,000 were saved from death or capture. Virtually every ship available was pressed into service, these included fishing boats, paddle steamers, coasters, yachts, and lifeboats - manned by Navy Vets, merchant seaman, stevedores, civil servants, farmers and sea scouts. On June 4th, 1940, the withdrawal to England was complete. Rescued soldiers later formed the heart of a greater army destined to return to the European mainland.
