Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.

1.W: Honestly, this place is very convenient for us.
M: But you didn’t buy anything here.
Q: Where does this conversation most probably take place?

2.M: Sorry to trouble you. But may I borrow a blanket? I feel cold.
W: I think we’ve got one. Could you wait until after take-off, please?
Q: What is the probable relationship between the two speakers?

3.W: Where can I buy “Shanghai Daily”?
M: Why not try the newsstand on campus?
Q: What does the man mean?

4.W: I wish my hair was longer.
M: Yes, It’s a pity you had it cut. If only you had listened to me.
Q: What can we learn from the conversation?

5.W: Are you on a business trip to Shanghai?
M: Well, yes and no. After doing some business in Shanghai, I’m going to visit the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Bund.
Q: What does the man mean?

6.M: Hi, Susan. Have you finished reading the book Prof. Johnson recommended?
W: Oh, I haven’t read it through the way I read a novel. I just read a few chapters that interested me.
Q: What does the woman mean?

7.W: Excuse me, does the express train leave at 2:05?
M: No. At 1:55. You must hurry. There are only 5 minutes left.
Q: What time is it now?

8.W: Have you read the writer’s latest best seller?
M: I’ve just finished it. It’s really wonderful.
Q: What are the speakers discussing?

9.W: Where did you take these pictures? They are quite good.
M: Last year we went to the Summer Palace.
Q: What are they doing?

10. W: Pardon me, officer, but I did not know this was a one-way street.
M: I’m sorry, but ignorance of the law is no excuse.
Q: What would the man probably do to the woman after the conversation?

Section B Passages

Tom and Mike like climbing mountains. They like ice climbing, skiing, mountain biking, and other exciting sports. But these sports all need equipment, and the equipment is expensive. They also like to travel to foreign countries, and these trips are expensive. It isn’t easy to get the time and money to go on an adventure, but they find ways to get these things. They find ways to do what they want to do.

For example, Tom and Mike are very good at sports. They are excellent skiers. One day, a ski company asked Tom to test some of their new equipment. They gave him ski equipment and clothes to test. Tom didn’t have to pay for these things. This saves him money. Because Tom and Mike are twins, they can both use the clothes and equipment. This is another way they can save money. But how do they find time?

Sometimes they get tired of working together. It isn’t easy working with a brother, but they have a reason for working. They must save money for an adventure. When they save enough money, Tom and Mike will leave their jobs. They will find new jobs when they come back.

Questions:

11. What are Tom and Mike interested in?

12. What did a ski company ask Tom to do?

13.When will the twins stop working?

To save electricity every employee is asked to turn off the lights when leaving his or her office.

All offices and hallways will be cleaned during working hours rather than at night. Please cooperate with the cleaning staff in this matter.

We are asking for everyone’s cooperation in making this plan a success. If you have further suggestions for using energy wisely, please contact your supervisor. Thank you.

Section C Longer Conversations

M: Can I help you?
W: Do you have a day tour of London?
M: Yes, of course.
W: Can you tell me what the cost will be?
M: Seventy pounds each person.
W: So that would be 140 pounds for myself and my husband. What about the two children, is there any reduction for them?
M: Certainly, we have half price for children.
W: That's fine. Could you tell me more details of the tour?
M: Here’s a leaflet for you to read. You can get all the information in it.
W: And will we have a guide during all this?
M: Of course. There's an official guide who will explain the sights to you in three languages, English, German and French.
W: Oh, that sounds perfect. We’d like to have the trip tomorrow, is it ok?
M: No problem. That’s the last day of April. Well, may I have your name please?
W: Linda Adams.
M: Mrs. Adams, Would you like to pay in cash or with a credit card?
W: Cash.
M: That’s fine.

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.
W: Hello, Mr Williams. I’m sure you know why I’m phoning. Are you in a position to give us a definite assurance that the goods will be delivered on time?
M: Well, um ... you can count on us to do our very best, however ...
W: Hmm. I don't mean your best isn't good enough, but will you meet the deadline or won't you?
M: I must be frank with you. We've run into a few problems.
W: Problems? What kind of problems?
M: Technical problems. Nothing very serious. There's no need to worry.
W: I hope not. According to your contract with us, you’ll have to pay a lot for your late delivery.
M: Yes, I'm perfectly aware of that. But do you need the whole order by the 24th?
W: What exactly are you suggesting?
M: You can count on us to get half of the order to you by then.
W: Hmm ... and how long before the other half is delivered?
M: Another week at the most!
W: Hmm ... you're sure that's all?
M: Yes, absolutely! You can depend on us to get half the order to you by the 24th and the other half within a week.
W: Hmm ... yes, that should be all right ... but there must be no further delays!
M: There won't be! Thank you! You've been very understanding. I really don’t know how to express my gratitude.
W: It’s ok. Keep in touch. Bye.
