Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has reaffirmed his commitment to fiscal reforms and warned that taxes will have to rise. He's also reached out to the opposition for help in tackling the multitude of problems facing the country.

During his first policy speech in parliament, Noda said the government and the central bank need to do all they can to tame the yen's strength.

The government has yet to bring the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant under control and Noda needs opposition help to secure the country's biggest rebuilding effort.

The Japanese Prime Minister also stressed that reining in of the public debt, twice the size of the 5 trillion US dollar economy, cannot wait and economic growth is necessary to salvage public finances creaking under the strain of a growing army of retirees.
