But he became the only president to ever resign, facing likely impeachment over the Watergate Scandal.

1972. Reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes, speaking by phone from the Bahamas to reporters in Hollywood, says a purported biography of him is a fake.

1968. Surveyor Seven, America's last unmanned probe of the moon lands on the lunar surface. The following year Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin make history as the first humans to set foot on the moon.

And 2006. "The Phantom of the Opera is there, inside my mind." In New York, "the Phantom of the Opera" leaps past "Cats" to become the longest-running show in Broadway history.
