Severe storms battered parts of the nation's midsection. It tore down trees and damaged homes. So far there were no reports of injuries. Last week’s storms killed at least 47 people in six states.

The White House says President Barack Obama remains opposed to sending US troops into Libya. A spokesman says Obama hopes the rebels get a boost from the decision by Britain, France and Italy to send military advisors.
