The White House says a Senate-backed deal to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling "achieves what's necessary". The deal would reopen the government through at least January 15th and the nation's borrowing authority would be extended through February 7th.
 
The earthquake that struck the central Philippine has killed at least 144 people. The quake also dealt a serious blow to the region's historical and religious legacy. A dozen or more churches, some of them hundreds of years old were heavily damaged.
 
New Jersey Senate rivals Cory Booker and Steve Lonegan have cast their ballots as voters choose a new senator. The winner will fill the remainder of the late Frank Lautenberg's Senate term. Booker says the race is a referendum on what's happening in Washington while Lonegan says he's closed the gap against the Newark mayor.
 
An injured kangaroo hopped through the Melbourne, Australia Airport. Wildlife volunteers captured the stray marsupial in the airport pharmacy. One of its rescuers named it Cyrus, and the kangaroo was taken to a local vet for treatment.
