The evaluation criteria of the Dragon Design Fund Award include not only the designers' personal achievements, but also their contributions to the industry and public as a whole.

Yan Zi, a personal image designer, won the award for her environmentally-friendly product.

"I used household rubbish to make a series of dresses. For example, I stitched 1,000 wine bottle caps into a traditional qipao dress, and 188 coke cans into an ancient-style armor. My point is, the waste we usually throw away without thinking can be recycled for some other purposes."

Brand designer Yuan Longjun is also on the winners' list for his contribution to western China's economy.

"I mainly work for small enterprises in Sichuan Province to sell their local products. For example, since 2000, I have cooperated with Baijia Vermicelli Company. From the logo design to how to place the products on supermarket shelves, from market analysis to advertisement presenting, I participated in every aspect of their promotions. Now, this company's annual sales have almost reached 1 billion and hold 45 percent of the market share."

Other talents in architecture design, interior design, product design and other fields also won awards. Gu Huanyu is the chief editor of magazine China Top Brands which co-sponsored the award. He points out that all the winners made conspicuous contributions to their own fields, but that some of these industries are more developed than others.

"Product design in China is comparatively more advanced than in other design industries. Especially in the field of home appliance and IT products, our designers are world-class."

For a long time, "Made in China" has been a label the entire country was proud of. Cheap labor is China's competitive advantage in the international market. But along with economic globalization, Chinese people have gradually realized the importance of creativity. Since 2005, Dragon Design Fund has held its annual top 10 Chinese youth designers' selection, aiming to provide young talents a platform and promote the development of the design industry. The competition is open to all designers in their 20s to 30s.
