Basic Guitar Chords

Hi - I'm Jon Seideman with and I'm going to teach you some guitar chord basics.

Guitar Chords: E Major

I'm going to start with the E-major chord, which involves all six strings. The E-chord is played taking your second finger, and placing it on the second fret of the second string, the A-string; your third finger on the second fret of the D-string, the third string; and your first finger on the first fret of the G-string; and then strum all six strings.

Guitar Chords: A Major

The A-major is a compliment to the E-major - it's actually very easy to play. It's all fretted on the second fret - use your first, second, and third fingers in a row starting with the D-string on the second fret, the G-string on the second fret, and the B, all on the second fret - that's the third, fourth, and fifth strings. Unlike the E-major chord, you only use the bottom five strings starting with the A, the open A. And you want to be sure not to accidentally hit the top E string.

Guitar Chords: G Major

Like the E-major, the G-major involves all six strings. Start with the third finger on the top E-string, the third fret; second finger, second string, second fret; fourth finger - pinky - third fret, the bottom string, the E-string. Strum all six strings.

Guitar Chords: C Major

The next chord I'm going to show you is the C-major chord. The C-major is played by placing the third finger on the third fret of the second string , or A-string; the second finger on the second fret of the D-string; and the first finger on the first fret of the B-string, which is the fifth string down. Like the A-chord, you only play the bottom five strings, being careful to avoid the top E-string.

Guitar Chords: D Major

Finally, I'm going to show you the D-major chord. The D-major is played by placing your first finger on the second fret of the fourth string, or G-string; the third finger is placed at the third fret of the fifth string, or B-string; and the second finger is placed at the second fret of the sixth string, or E-string. Unlike the other chords I showed you, the D-string only involves the bottom four strings, starting with the open D-string at the top. And again, you want to be careful to avoid the open A and E string above the D.

Using the Basic Guitar Chords

With these five basic chords, you can play many, many songs - it's the basis of a lot of popular music, so I think you;ll get a lot of enjoyment out of learning them. Once you have these chords mastered, you can start to string them together in different patterns to create songs, or even copy popular songs.

And that's all there is to it! To learn more, check us out at .
