Kai-Fu Lee, president of Google Inc.'s (GOOG) China operations, is resigning from the company, according to two people familiar with the matter.

He will be succeeded internally by another Google executive, according to one of the people familiar with the matter, who added that Google has no plans to scale back its operations in China.

Mr. Lee left Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) to join Google in 2005 to develop the company's operations in China. His hiring kicked off a legal battle between Microsoft and Google over Mr. Lee's move.

During Mr. Lee's tenure, usage of Google products, including its search service, has grown among Chinese users. The company has also launched some products unique to the market, including an online music service.

But Google still trails Chinese search leader Baidu by a wide margin. And it has continued to encounter scrutiny from the Chinese government, which has selectively blocked services such as its video-sharing site, YouTube.

One of the people familiar with the matter said Mr. Lee is leaving to work on his own venture. Mr. Lee could not be reached for comment.
