背景介绍:

People's behaviour in groups is fascinating and frequently disturbing. As soon as humans are bounded together in groups we start to do odd things: copy other members' behaviour, favour members of own group over others, look for a leader to worship and look down on other groups.

But think about the types of groups you belong to, and you'llrealise they differ differently. Some groups are more like alumnus or alumna, in the same major, even in the same living apartment who have known each other for a long time. The members of these groups tend to be long-standing, tight-knit, protecting each other. Perhaps it's not surprising people in these groups radically change their behaviour, preferring members of their own groups over others in many ways.

话题:

- In a society pursuing individualism, personal freedom and privacy, is it easy for people to form a long-standing group voluntarily?

- Is it beneficial for members' favourism of his own group?

- Do you think the prejudice between different groups is a natural or nutrient?

- DIY topic about group's forming and prejudice between groups?

范例1:

In my view, even in a society which worship individualism a lot, there's a good reason to attach to a group and favour your own group - normally it is also advantageous to yourself. You protect yourself by protecting others like you.

Firstly, people build their own identities from their group memberships. For example, think of each of the groups you belong to: say at work, at school or within your family. Part of who you are is probably defined by these groups. Putting it in other way around: the nature of your group memberships define your identity.

Furthermore, as our group membership forms our identity, it is natural for us to want to be part of groups that are both high status and have a positive image. Crucially enough, high status groups only have that high status when compared to other groups. In other words: knowing your group is superior requires having a worse group to look down upon. Therefore, any conscious favourism of his own group is to boost their own identities through making their own group look better. As a result, we are motivated to improve the image and status of our own group in comparison with others.

All in all, it's quite easy to form a group even without realising it. And its favourism and self-protectism is both a subtle and profound observation about human nature.
