Mei Yiqi (梅贻琦), the Former President of the University of Tsinghua，has ever said that the greatness of an university does not rely on magnificent buildings but on masters with both academic ability and moral integrity.
The Republic of China(1912-1949) was an unparalleled period which was marked by a great number of Masters, such as Gu Hongming (辜鸿铭), Chen Yinque (陈寅恪)， Wang Guowei (王国维) and so forth. All of them set up a monument in Chinese educational history.


陈寅恪（1890年7月3日－1969年10月7日），江西省义宁州（今修水县）人，生于湖南长沙。中国现代历史学家、古典文学研究家、语言学家，中央研究院院士，通晓二十余种语言，史学脱胎于乾嘉考据之学，《柳如是别传》；《隋唐制度渊源略论稿》，《唐代政治史述论稿》为其代表作。

However, the current situation of Chinese universities is not that satisfactory. Academic plagiarism becomes common practice. Furthermore, over the past week, the scandal of corruption of XX University rose public attention. The head of admissions at the prestigious XX University of China, is being investigated for his role in a scandal that involved selling seats in the public university for hefty prices. All of these affect people trust towards University, which was once regarded as the purest paradise.

Dating back to 358BC, the Athens Academy, set up by the famous Greek philosopher Plato, was regarded as the earliest ancestor of university in the world. From then on, university has become the paradise of wisdom in which teachers and students are constantly pursuing an even brighter future for the whole human beings. Unfortunately, in current China, universities are losing their basic functions. It is no longer the heaven of academy, but a tool for mundane pursuit, such as fame and pecuniary benefit. Gradually, people’s faith towards university cracks, weakens, and even collapses. It is undeniable that compared with 70 years ago, the economy today achieves flying development. However, the accomplishment and spirit of that time make us feel profoundly ashamed. The principle proposed by Chen Yinque seems to be an unachievable dream; the world which enjoys independence of spirit and freedom of thought become a utopia.
What problems are our universities confronting with?
Firstly, in current society, freedom of thought is a bubble, which looks beautiful but easy to break. Academy should haven’t had any relationship with politics. What it servers should be truth rather than any ideology. However, in China, democratic arguments have to be prohibited once it is conflicted with what is advocated by our Party. As a result, truth is covered while dishonesty is prevailing.
Secondly, the emphasis on economic development cultivates a mania for money. People, even those academic professors, worship money very much. Once people intellect gives up to wealth, it is not far from the degeneration of morality. That’s why scandals of academic plagiary become common practice in Chinese universities, even in a few prestigious universities.
In my mind, university is a holy land, in which truth is pursued and righteous people are educated. What’ more, it is the spring which ceaselessly transmits talents to construct a better world.

The role of the university in the society may not be measured by rankings and it may not depend completely even on the comprehensiveness of curriculum. As MEI YIQI once said, “The greatness of a university is not in its grand buildings but in its masters of different fields.” Moreover, these masters not only have the profound knowledge on his field, but also have a unique insight on the ideas, theories even unsung talents that have been sprouted in the society.
One hundred years ago, when HU SHI sat for USA study enrollment test, his literature subject was the highest 100 points, while his science subject was only 12 points. If he lived in our modern society, he must have been directly discarded by our screening system. From MEI YIQI’s insightful quote and HU SHI’s story, we can safely deduce that the greatness of a university has little dependence on the society’s economic situation and its people’s prosperity. It mainly relies on the scholars and students’ eagerness for the knowledge, the culture and its people.
