There is no doubt that traffic and pollution from vehicles have become huge problems, both in cities and on motorways. Solving these problems is likely to need more than a simple rise in the price of petrol. While it is undeniable that private car use is one of the main causes of the increase in traffic and pollution, higher fuel costs are unlikely to limit the number of drivers for long. As this policy would also affect the cost of public transport, it would be very unpopular with everyone who needs to travel on the roads. But there are various other measures that could be implemented that would have a huge effect on these problems. To tackle the problem of pollution, cleaner fuels need to be developed. The technology is already available to produce electric cars that would be both quieter and cleaner to use. Persuading manufacturers and travelers to adopt this new technology would be a more effective strategy for improving air quality, especially in cities.
在城市与高速公路上，拥堵的交通以及车辆所产生的污染无疑已成为了严峻的问题。要解决这些问题，仅靠简单地提高油价很可能是不够的。 尽管无可否认私家车的使用是造成交通拥堵与污染加剧的主要原因之一，但高油价不太可能一劳永逸地限制司机数量。因为油价的上涨势必也会是公共交通的成本水涨船高，而这必然会遭到那些需要经常出行的人们的反对。然而对于这些问题，我们也还有其他富有成效的方法可以解决。 我认为为了解决污染问题，需要大力发展更清洁的能源。目前我们在技术上已经可以生产出更加节能且安静的电动汽车。而帮助生产商与出行者们逐步在生活中适应这种新技术将会是在提高空气质量、特别是城市空气质量方面，更加有效的策略。
