The Olympic Games in Sochi not only provides a stage for the world’s best athletes, they also offer a platform for China to promote its growing relationship with the Olympic movement.

CCTV’s reporter Tracey Holmes reports on the latest effort by the cities of Beijing and Zhangjiakou to win the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The main press centre in Sochi is home to 13000 media here to cover the Sochi Olympics over the next two weeks, But on Saturday the focus became the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic bid as six delegates held a press conference to answer a range of questions from the world’s media.

The delegates confirmed that a survey conducted across several Chinese cities returned a 94.8 percent approval rating.

It was confirmed that a speed rail link connecting all three clusters of Olympic venues will be built regardless of the bid’s success, guaranteeing both economic and social benefits.

Beijing’s deputy mayor, Yang Xiaochao, says the bid will address a level of inequality beyond Beijing’s boundaries.

"The economy of Zhangjiakou and its surrounding areas was not very developed. The bid would boost the harmonious and mutual development of our two regions, and help improve people’s standard of living," he said.

"Here in Sochi there has been a lot of criticisms about the overflowing budget. Because all of the facilities have been built from scratch. In Beijing it’s gonna be a very different story, because of the late in 2008. It means 12 of 50 facilities are already complete," said Tracey Holmes.

Beijing could become the first city in the world to host both a summer and winter olympics. Beijing Sports Bureau chief, Li Ying Chuan says that means the gains made in 2008 could be repeated in 2022.

"The winner is a benefit for the society and its economy. And I think it’s the same of the 2008 Olympic Games," he said.

Beijing is competing against other bid cities from Norway, Ukraine, Poland and Kazakhstan.
