Cars are not the only drain on energy resources. The generation of electricity also causes problems. Although it has to be conceded that everybody needs electricity, there is no getting around the fact that electricity is often used wastefully. For example, are all large neon lights in cities really necessary? These lights could be turned off when not in use. Energy saving is not enough on its own, though. In the longer term, we must find alternative sources of power. The most commonly-made suggestion is to expand nuclear power, which does not cause pollution. However, the possibility of nuclear accidents may mean it is not worth the risk. On the other hand, clean sources of energy do exist, including solar, wind and hydro-electric power. It is important that energy be conserved whenever possible and that research into alternative energy sources be continued.
