PART I  LISTENING COMPREHENSION

In Section A, B and C you will hear everything once only.  Listen carefully and then answer the questions that follow.  Select the correct response for each question.

SECTION A  STATEMENT

In this section you will hear 8 statements.  At  the end of the statement you will be given 10 seconds to answer each of the following 8 questions.  Now listen to the statements.

I would prefer a new car even though the floor model is less expensive, so can you order one for me?

The reason why I never read newspapers but only books is that the former is a waste of time.  A famous man once said that newspapers separate what is important from what is not important and then print that which is not important.

If only you had signaled your intention to turn a little sooner!  Just look at the mess you've made of my car!

If you hadn't mentioned their dinner party, I would have gone home.  You know, that would have been the third time I've disappointed them this month.

I had the toothache till last year and was all right until last Sunday.  Then it started hurting again.

I'm afraid we're lost.  Let's pull in here.  While I'm filling the tank, you ask about the directions and get me a soft drink.

I have eaten in so many restaurants during the past week that the thought of eating out again makes me weak.  But there is no way to get out of this appointment.

It's a shame that we'd have to postpone the outing until Saturday in case of rain because all the food has already been ordered and will probably spoil.

SECTION B  CONVERSATION

In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations between two speakers.  At the end of each conversation you will be given 10 seconds to answer each of the following 8 questions.  Now listen to the conversations.

F: Your yard is always so beautiful, Bill.  You must have a gardener.
M: Oh, no.  It would cost at least '50 a month to hire someone to do the work, so I do most of it myself.  I enjoy taking care of the flowers, but I have to do the trimming and to weed the grass.

M: Did you find what you wanted?  You've been gone all afternoon.
F: I looked all over town, but couldn't find any bookcases on sale.  They're so expensive.  I guess I'll wait a while longer.

F: Professor Horton, have you heard the morning news report?  Linda resigned her post as general secretary.
M: I didn't turn on the radio this morning, but I did see the headlines.  If you remember, she threatened to leave office at the last cabinet meeting.

M: Is your baby on solid food yet?  Ours isn't.
F: Oh, yes.  He's had cereal and mashed banana so far, and I'm going to try him on vegetables next week.

F: Does everything look all right to you?  I want it to be perfect.
M: I think you've made a mistake.  Don't the napkins go on the left and the silverware on the right?

F: Susan told me you were on a diet.  How much weight have you lost?
M: Well, to start with, I weighed 160 pounds.  The first two weeks I took off 10 pounds, but then I gained back 3 over the holidays.

M: Are you going to the post office for stamps or to pick up a package?
F: Neither.  I left a letter for the postman to take yesterday, but he left it clipped to the mailbox.  And this check has got to be in the mail today.  I'd better hurry.

F: I'm so glad I don't have your job; working all night and sleeping in the daytime.
M: Oh, I stopped that when I got my promotion.  Now I'm on three days and off two.

PART V  DICTATION [15 MIN.]

Listen to the following passage.  Altogether the passage will be read to you four times.  During the first reading, which will be read at normal speed, listen and try to understand the meaning.  For the second and third readings, the passage will be read sentence by sentence, or phrase by phrase, with intervals of 15 seconds.  The last reading will be read at normal speed again and during this time you should check your work.  You will then be given 2 minutes to check through your work once more.

Now, listen to the passage.

To be a good teacher, you must also realize some of the qualities of a good actor are important. /  It is insufficient to possess only the knowledge of the field you are teaching. /  You must also be able to make your 'audience' really involve themselves. /  You must speak clearly, in a good, strong, pleasing voice / which is fully under your control. /  And you must be able to act out what you are teaching / in order to make your meaning clear. /  Watch a good teacher, / and you will see that he or she does not sit motionless in front of the class, / but rather stands the whole time, / often walking about, using his or her arms, hands and fingers to help explain, / and facial expressions to show feelings. /  However, when we say that some of the gifts of a good actor are of value to a good teacher, / we don't mean that a teacher will indeed be able to act well on the stage, / for there are many important differences between the work of a teacher and that of an actor. /

The second and third readings.  You should begin writing now.

The last reading.  Now, you have two minutes to check through your work.

This is the end of the Dictation.
