SECTION A  STATEMENT
In this section you will hear 8 statements.  At  the end of the statement you will be given 10 seconds to answer each of the following 8 questions.  Now listen to the statements.
1. Kathy usually works five days and is off for two.  Yesterday she was off and went shopping with her friend Lisa.  They bought a fifty-dollar skirt for half price.
2. Every student except Bill handed in the report in class.
3. It took double Peter's weekly salary to buy the five-hundred-dollar encyclopedia.
4. Prices of all clothes have been reduced by up to one-fourth at Parker's shop.
5. Susan went to the new supermarket yesterday and she found that the prices there were quite reasonable.  They had a great variety of meats and vegetables, but the customers had to bag their own groceries.
6. We arrived at ten to nine, but the manager who asked us to come hadn't arrived.  So we had to wait until ten after.
7. Jane didn't think badly of Jean though they once quarreled with each other.

SECTION B  CONVERSATION
In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations between two speakers.  At the end of each conversation you will be given 10 seconds to answer each of the following 8 questions.  Now listen to the conversations.
9. F: I can't find my lunch box.  I'm sure I left it on the desk when I got here.
M: Never mind.  I'll treat you today at that restaurant near the station.
10. M: How much are these wooden chairs?
F: Twenty dollars each, thirty-five dollars for a pair, or sixty-five dollars for four.
11. F: How did you like the play at Victor's theater?
M: Oh, my sister was pleased with their costumes, but I left at the intermission because the acting was so poor.
12. F: Jim, are you going straight home after school today?
M: No.  I've a class till 3 o'clock, and after that I'll spend 3 hours at the library before going home.
13. M: What's that terrible sound?  It's getting on my nerves.
F: It's Tom.  He's practicing his drums.
14. M: Are you finished with your report?

SECTION C  NEWS BROADCAST
Questions 17 and 18 are based on the following news item.  At the end of the news item you will be given 20 seconds to answer the following questions.  Now listen to the news.
a bomb ripped through a commuter train in central Pakistan, killing at least eight people, and injuring dozens more.  So far there have been on claims of responsibility.  Police say the bomb exploded on Tuesday as the train was entering a station in Lahore, the capital of Punjab Province.  The attack occurred just one day after two other bombings in Pakistan which killed at least six people and injured 48 others.

Several explosions in Algeria have reportedly claimed the lives of at least two people.  A bomb went off in a market near the capital of Algiers killing two and injuring 32.  This follows two earlier bombings that wounded 12 people.  The Agency says that a suspected terrorist was killed by security forces following one of these explosions.
 
Questions 21 and 22 are based on the following news item.  At the end of the news item you will be given 20 seconds to answer the following questions.  Now listen to the news.
Long lines have formed outside British post offices as people rushed to buy new stamps featuring portraits of Diana, Princess of Wales.  There are 5 different stamps, each featuring a picture of Diana, framed in lilac.  They are forecast to be the most popular stamps in British history.  All profits from the stamps will be donated to the Princess of Wales fund.  The post office has already pledged 6 million pounds to the fund based on the advanced sales of the stamps and expected demand for them.
 
Question 23 is based on the following news item.  At the end of the news item you will be given 10 seconds to answer the following question.  Now listen to the news.
Now have a look at what's been happening on the financial markets.  On the share market in Tokyo, the Nikei is down 110 points at 21,705.  In New York the Dow closed down 71 points at 5,549.  Earlier London's 100 share index was 20 points lower at 3,805.  In early Asian trading, the dollar is at once German Mark 50 point 4 and it's at 180 point 2 Japanese Yen.  The pound is at '1 dollar 50 point 1.
 
Questions 24 and 25 are based on the following news item.  At the end of the news item you will be given 20 seconds to answer the following questions.  Now listen to the news.
Riot police have clashed with football supporters at a friendly match between Germany and Holland at Rotterdam, prompting the city's mayor to declare a state of emergency.  The mayor of Rotterdam announced the measure after fighting broke out between rival fans in the city center.  At the end of the game, which Germany won one nil, riot police made baton charges against German fans in the stadium.  Police said 47 people were arrested and two fans were hospitalized with knife wounds.

PART II  DICTATION [15 MIN.]
Listen to the following passage.  Altogether the passage will be read to you four times.  During the first reading, which will be read at normal speed, listen and try to understand the meaning.  For the second and third readings, the passage will be read sentence by sentence, or phrase by phrase, with intervals of 15 seconds.  The last reading will be read at normal speed again and during this time you should check your work.  You will then be given 2 minutes to check through your work once more.
