THE nine Bertelsmann book stores in Shanghai will not be affected after the group announced the closure of 36 outlets across the country due to financial problems, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The company is expected to release a statement late today.

Yu Le, director of Bertelsmann in China, said Shanghai's outlets were not on the closure list because they are managed by Shanghai Bertelsmann Culture Industry Co. However, the 36 outlets to be closed in 18 other cities are managed by 21st Century Book Chain Company. It plans to close all the outlets by the end of July.

Bertelsmann will not quit from the Chinese market, Yu told the newspaper.

He said the group had made large investments in both administration and finance, but that the business of 21st Century Book Chain Company remained unsatisfactory.

"It lacks essential large-scale profits and thus can not develop in a long run. Besides, the rise of online book sales and sharper competition made it difficult for the company to adapt to the changes," he told the newspaper.

Great effort was made to avoid the present situation, however, the group had to make the "tough" decision to close the chain stores following a series of strategic business evaluations, he told the newspaper.

Some industry insiders said outlets in Shanghai did not enjoy good business either, but there had not been large losses so far, the report said.

The history of Bertelsmann AG in China dates to 1993, when the former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl made a historical visit to China, the report said.

Yu also said Bertelsmann was still confident of the development of the Chinese market as it was still regarded as one of three major areas in the group's global expansion plans, according to the report

"We will transfer the investment on the 21st Century Book Chain Company to other business projects in China," he told the newspaper.
