Kedchikan lies in the heart of 17-million-acre Tongass National Forest, where birds and other wildlife make their home. Bears can often be seen searching for their favorite food - salmon - in streams that flow through the forest. Majestic bald eagles also feast on the salmon. And in spring, the sound of baby eagles calling from their nests for lunch and dinner fills the air.

Birds are not the only ones that fly high in the sky. Floatplanes gives visitors a bird's eye view of Misty Fjords National Monument, 40 miles to the south. Created by glaciers, this wilderness area encompasses numerous waterfalls, mist-covered ridges and miles of glaciers.

Of course no trip to Kedchikan, the Salmon capital of the world, is complete without a fishing trip. Five species of salmon swim in the surrounding waters, so no one goes home empty-handed. For those who prefer something other than salmon, halibut fishing is also popular. Catching them is almost more fun than eating them!

All too soon your Alaska adventure will end. And you'll be making plans to return.
