Robert Edwards was blinded in a traffic  accident nine years ago. He was also half deaf because of old age. Last week,he was walking near his home when a thunderstorm approached. He came under a tree and was struck by lightning. He was knocked to the ground and woke up some 20 minutes later, lying face down in water below a tree. He went into the house and  lay down in bed. A short time later, he awoke; his legs couldn't move and he was trembling, but, when he opened his eyes, he could see the clock across the room in front of him. When his wife entered, he saw her for the first time in nine years. Doctors confirm that he has regained his sight and hearing apparently from the flash of lighting, but they are unable to explain the reason. The only possible explanation offered by one doctor was that, since Edwards lost his sight as a result of a hard blow in a terrible accident, perhaps the only way could be restored was by another blow.

Part VII Writing

Task I:

Dear Mr. President,

I am a student of English Department. I'm not quite content with the canteen service on campus.

First of all, there should be more variety of dishes available. Many students are complaining about eating the same food every day.

Secondly, the price of the food is higher than we can afford. We hope that the canteen not only provides us with delicious food, but also at a reasonable price.

In addition, it will be better to lengthen the service hours. It is really crowded at 11:30 every day in the canteen.

I hope that the criticisms I have made about the canteen are accepted by you and taken into consideration for possible change.

Yours respectfully,

Li Ming

Task II:

It is well-known that the task of college students is to study, and some students regard marks very important. They think that their primary task is to study and learn from teachers and textbooks. They seldom take apart in other activities, for they are afraid that those activities will affect their study. Thus they neglect the development of practical ability.

While some other students think it most important to develop one's own practical ability. They think that college students should not only learn the textbook knowledge, what's more, they should also learn from outside the textbooks. They think one's own practical ability is of primary importance. So they take every chance as possibly as they can to develop their own practical ability.

In my opinion, I think we should first study hard, but we should not neglect our own practical abilities, for when we enter the society, we need various abilities. If we are only in possession of book knowledge, it is hard for us to be useful to the society.
