The Berlin Wall

The division of [-----1-----] into 4 Allied occupation zones left Berlin lying in the middle of the Soviet Zone, yet still divided between east and west.

[-----2-----] rose immediately after the soldiers settled in. Particularly as most transportation from western Europe to Berlin had to travel through Soviet controlled territory. The Berlin Airlift [-----3-----] in 1948 when the Soviet [--4(短句)--].

Although the airlift was successful and the blockade was lifted, tensions continued. Particularly as East Germans [-----5-----] West Berlin. In 1961, East Germany put up the Berlin Wall, partially splitting the city in two, until it was [-----6-----] in 1989.
