Marilyn Monroe's iconic "subway dress" was sold for a record-breaking 4.6 million US dollars at an auction of actress Debbie Reynolds' Hollywood memorabilia. The auction earned a total of 22.8 million dollars.

The "subway dress" was worn by Monroe in the 1955 movie "The Seven Year Itch". The winning bid rose above five million dollars after taxes and fees were included, far surpassing pre-sale estimates of one to two million dollars.
Debbie Reynolds, actress, said, "That's an iconic dress. It's the most famous in history. It's proven to be."

Reynolds is a singer, dancer and actress who rose to fame in Hollywood during the 1950s. The Monroe dress was among a large collection of movie costumes and other memorabilia collected by Reynolds over the past forty years.
The auction resulted in several major sales, including dresses worn by Audrey Hepburn and Judy Garland.

A second auction of items from Reynolds' collection will take place in December.
