Ritva’s quilt

Once upon a time in the far north, there was a small town whose people had a reputation (名誉) for being very kind but not very intelligent. During the long winter evenings, people who lived nearby often sat by the fires and told stories about what happened there.

In the town lived a happy couple in a tiny house. One day, Ritva, the wife, decided to make a fine patch quilt (被子) for her husband, Kalle. To make the quilt, she sewed together many pieces of cloth of different patterns and colours.

When she finished, Ritva was very pleased with the result. She invited her neighbors to come and see her work. Everyone admired it. Kalle was especially happy. He told her how beautiful the quilt was and how much he appreciated it.

When Kalle went to sleep that night, he covered himself with the new quilt. The night was cold, so he pulled it up over his ears. But as soon as he did that, his feet were uncovered because the quilt was too short!

In the morning, Kalle told Ritva what had happened. “When I pull the cover over my ears, my feet get cold.” “Good husband,” Ritva said, “did you say the quilt covered your ears but not your feet?” “That’s right,” he replied. “My neck and ears were warm, but my feet were cold. It’s too short.”

That night when he went to sleep, Kalle again used the new quilt. But after he covered his neck and ears and face, his feet were cold, just like the night before. The next morning he explained this to Ritva. “Perhaps I need to cut more off the top,” she thought.

So she cut another wide strip from the top and stitched (缝) it to the bottom of the quilt. But of course, that did not solve the problem!

Ritva kept cutting at one end and adding to the other end. Finally she gave up and decided to make Kalle a new quilt. They both hoped it would be long enough this time!
