(Text 1)

M:How are you going to the airport on Wednesday,Betty?

W:I’m going to take the bus.I can get off just outside the airport.A taxi is too expensive.

 (Text 2)

W:Can you tell us what you like doing in the evening?

M:Well,I like music.I listen to a lot of pop music, but most of all I like watching TV.It’s much better than reading a book.

 (Text 3)

M:Wow! Your homework looks great.

W:Thanks.I did it on my computer.

M:But come to think of it.Didn’t Mrs Sawyer tell us we had to write it in our books?

W:Oh,no.You are right.Oh,what am I going to do now?

 (Text 4)

M:Are you and Ann going straight to the restaurant from work tonight?

W:Actually I am leaving work early because I need to do some shopping in the market, and after that,I am going to meet Ann outside the cinema. She doesn’t know where the restaurant is,you know.

 (Text 5)

W:Excuse me,have you got a minute?Hmm,I’ve been waiting for ages and I was wondering...

M:The doctors are very busy.

W:No,no,no.It’s not that. It’s just that I’m rather thirsty after all this time.Have you thought of getting a drink machine put in?

M:Err,I’ll speak to the hospital management about that.

 (Text 6)

M:You’re not looking too good. Are you sure you are all right?

W:It was a long flight.I’ll be fine after a good night’s sleep.

M:You look very pale.

W:These long flights are just so very boring, and you just have to sit there in your seat without moving and you know I like to get as much exercise as possible.I’m sure I’ll be back to normal tomorrow.

 (Text 7)

M:So what happened,madam?

W:Well,I saw this old man.He was kind of holding his bag like this.He just left the bank and I was still queuing up to collect my money, but I was near the door. Now this young man came running past him and tried to get the bag.

M:And they both fell down?

W:Yeah, and the young man ran away, and the poor old man fell on the sidewalk, still holding his bag tightly. And we managed to help him up.Now can I go back in to collect my money?

M:Would you mind coming with us,madam? We need more information.

 (Text 8)

M:Hello,Susan.

W:Macman Dossor,my favorite customer.How are you?

M:I’m fine.I heard you weren’t well.

W:Well,I was away for a couple of weeks. But I am fine now.Err,you were going to the States,

weren’t you?

M:Well,I didn’t make it.What I’ve been doing is reorganizing the whole department nonstop since I saw you, just haven’t had a moment to myself. This is the first time I’ve been in here since Christmas.

W:Well,it’s good to see you again. Are you ready to order?

 (Text 9)

W:Well,I got this as a present from my father when I was fourteen. And I like it very much. But my family thought I might lose my interest soon, and then I go off the idea.Mum doesn’t believe there will be any money in it,but Dad is quite interested because besides football it’s the only thing I can talk to him about at the moment. If you’re not going to make the effort to practice it,no one is ever going to be interested in you.I think one of the reasons you see few girls playing in concerts is that they are not willing to do all that work.

 (Text 10)

W:Hi,Bill, can you tell me how it happened?

M:Sure.I was mountain climbing in New Hampshire in 1982.Suddenly the weather became really bad. There was a lot of snow and we couldn’t see anything. We got lost.Well,we spent four days on the mountain. The temperature was 20 degrees below zero.We didn’t have any equipment or food.

W:So what happened?I guess someone found you,right?

M:Yes,but we were very sick.I couldn’t move my legs because of the cold.I spent two months in the hospital. The doctors removed my legs.

W:Right. So you lost your legs, but you want to try your best to stay active.

M:That’s right. In fact,I decided to make some new legs for myself.I realize that no one has to be physically disabled. We can use modern technology to help us.

W:And you built these great new legs. Can you go mountain climbing again?

M:Yes,I can.In fact, these are better than climbing shoes. The spring design means they are much more powerful.

M:I wasn’t too fond of the lecture classes of 400 students in my general courses.Halfway through my second term, when I was considering whether or not to come back in the fall,I went on the Internet and came across AmeriCorps. Then I joined the organization. And that was what I did last school year.I worked on making roads, building a house, serving as a teacher’s assistant, and working as a camp officer in several projects in South Carolina and Florida. It’s been a great experience. And I’ve almost learned more than what I could have in college.Since I didn’t really want to be at that school and I wasn’t interested in my major anyway,I think this was better for me.After 1700 hours of service,I received 4750 dollars.I can use that to pay off the money I borrowed from the banks or for what I need when I go back to school this fall at Columbus State in Ohio.Classes are smaller there, and I’ll be majoring in German education. After working with the kids, now I know I want to be a teacher.
