The filmmaker James Cameron has said he hopes fans will get ‘Avenger fatigue ’ as he’s fed up of seeing the same superhero movies again and again, particularly ones that revolve around egotistical male protagonists.

At a press event to promote his new documentary series on Saturday, Cameron said: ‘I’m hoping we’re going to start getting Avenger fatigue. Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on, guys, there are other stories to tell besides, you know, males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process.’

Avengers: Infinity War hits cinemas on 26 April and will feature the team of superheros reuniting (again). The sheer volume of the comic book adaptations has been huge, with 18 movies over the course of an entire decade leading up to this point.

However, the movies don’t seem to be falling out of favour with fans, as the release is expected to break box office records. The latest box office tracking puts Infinity War’s opening weekend haul at around $200 million.

While it probably is about time somebody comes up with a new idea for a film, Cameron also revealed to reporters that he has been working on the direction of the next four installments of Avatar. The director explained that he wanted the movies to be ‘a generational family saga.’
