On October 13, 1792, the White House cornerstone is laid.

Celebrating a rebuilt White House after more than 3 years of renovations, President Truman receives the gift of a clock from France's ambassador Bonnet. It all began with the placing of the first cornerstone on October 13, 1792. Then, more than 150 years later, sinking walls, rotting beams and crumbling plaster caused the stately structure to be declared uninhabitable. There was even talk of scrapping it. Many in the counrty were relieved of the decision to restore it, agreeing with Theodore Roosevelt that - It is a good thing to preserve such buildings as historic monuments, to keep alive our sense of continuity with the Nation's past.
