October 12, 1928 - Graf Zeppelin's First TransAtlantic Flight.

October 12th, 1928, the Graf Zeppelin was the first commercial dirigible to cross the Atlantic. First class service is offered its passengers who are airborne 111 hours out of Germany, before landing in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The Graf Zeppelin, named after designer Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, made more than 500 TransAtlantic flights before Hugo Eckener retired it in favor of the hydrogen-inflated Hindenburg. While landing in Lakehurst after a trans-Atlantic flight in 1937, the Hindenburg caught fire and was consumed in minutes. 33 of its 97 passengers were killed, but a heroic effort by US Navy personnel saved the others. That was the end of commercial dirge of it.
