On June 7th,1942 - Battle of Midway.
A thousand miles northwest of Honolulu, the island of Midway became a target for Admiral Yamamoto's Japanese fleet. As he had with Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto planned a surprise assault that would key an advance on Hawaii, but this time U.S. Naval intelligence decoded Japanese messages and was prepared for a critical showdown. The Japanese plan to decoy American ships toward Alaska, but US Naval forces declined the bait. In a reverse surprise, US planes knocked out four aircraft carriers and a dozen other vessels. The battle of Midway, which ended with a Japanese retreat, reversed the tide for the previously invincible Japanese Navy. All its previous assaults had been victorious - and all from June 7th, 1942 were failures.
