September 15th, 1940 - RAF pilots gun down 185 German planes in the Battle of Britain.

In the summer of 1940, an all-out air assault was launched across the English Channel by Germany. Adolf Hitler hoped that his Luftwaffe would destroy the much smaller British Royal Airforce for Operation Sea Lion, his planned invasion of Britain. German aircraft outnumbered the British by more than 3 to 1, but a new radar system assisted the heroic young R.A.F. pilots in downing their enemies by better than 2 to 1. On September 15th, 1940, as London endured intensive bombing, 185 German planes went down to turn the tide in the Battle of Britain, and force Hitler to abandon Sea Lion. Winston Churchill said, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
