Doctors say congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is making a remarkable recovery after being shot in the head. Giffords is now breathing on her own and has been upgraded to serious condition.

President Barack Obama is asking Americans to follow his lead on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He and first lady are volunteering in Washington today, other top officials are expected to do the same across the country.

The worst flooding in a century is threatening a second region in Australia. The bodies of at least two more flood victims were found over the weekend, bringing the death toll to 30 with about a dozen people missing.

If the Golden Globes are indications of what movies will do well at the Oscars. The Social Network should win big this year. The movie took in four awards. Best dramatic actor and actress went to Colin Firth for the King’s Speech and Natalie Portman for Black Swan.
