Fans mobbed the Chinese mainland's Apple stores in Beijing, as the iPad went on sale at 8 am this morning. Some shoppers queued all night in heavy rain to buy one of the coveted tablet computers.

Any retailer in the world would love to see its products be as popular as this.

The reason for the iPad buzz is really simple.

Re-booting his business.

Bookstore owner Han Ziwen said, "I run a book store. The whole publishing industry will have a re-shuffle just because of it. So my book store will either die or get reborn."

Wei Ziwen queued more than 60 hours to become the first to buy two iPads.

For others, it's a love affair with technology.

Beijing nurse He Jianing said, "I arrived here around 7:30 in the morning. It didn't take too much time. I feel excited about being here. I'm very happy. The reason I bought it? Just because I just love it."

Freelancer Yang Luyi said, "I can use it to watch movies in the car. It's just for entertainment."

Other fans are more pragmatic.

Teacher Yanfang said, "I believe it's the portability and battery power that attract me to buy. When you're on a business trip, even with the best computers, the battery lasts only 2 to 3 hours. But the iPad battery could last around 9 hours."

The iPad's prices will be higher than in the US.

The 16-gigabyte model lists for 3,988 yuan, and 64 gigabytes will cost you 5,588.

Neither Apple's spokeswoman nor sales people would comments on available stocks.

But Apple has apparently enough for the Chinese Mainland market.

The buzz around the iPad has helped propel Apple to become the world's most valuable technology stock, a remarkable turnaround of a company that nearly went out of business in the 1990s.

Nearly three-fifths of its revenues come from outside the US. The company is counting on its base of fans who already own an iPod, iPhone or Mac to add the iPad to their collection as rivals line up with their own tablets.
