Some £3 billion was added to the stock market value of Lloyds as it revealed a surge in profits alongside plans to float spin-off lender TSB in the summer. 
The state-backed lender posted underlying profits of £1.8 billion in the first three months of the year, up 22 per cent on the same period last year.
Charges on bad loans dropped 57 per cent from a year earlier to £431 million, while it cut costs by 5 per cent to £2.3 billion.
The results were greeted warmly by investors and City analysts, with Lloyds shares the biggest riser on the FTSE 100 index of the UK’s biggest blue-chip companies yesterday.
