Ferrera didn't allow her mother's worries to stop her, and in 2002, at age 17, she got her first big break. That year, she won a part in a Disney Channel dance movie called Gotta Kick it Up! Then in 2005, Ferrera starred in the coming-of-age movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

But she didn't become a big star until 2006 when she found success as "ugly" Betty. The show has opened doors for Ferrera - doors that were closed to Latina actresses in the past. Ferrera's next film project is the sequel to the Sisterhood movie, which opens in theaters later this year.

Similar to her Betty character, Ferrera makes no apologies for not being the "perfect size." Happy with her body, she serves as a positive role model for young girls.

Ferrera truly shines as a positive example for both women and minorities. With her one-of-a-kind appeal, Ferrera keeps Ugly Betty fans coming back for more. "I'm so happy and humbled to be on a show that's not only fun...but is making a difference and inspiring people," she says.
