"The Queen of Gems"
Pearls are said to be the oldest-known gem. Legends state that ancient Egyptians prized the jewel so much they were buried with them.

Throughout the centuries natural pearls were highly valued and worn only by society's wealthiest members. But after Kokichi Mikimoto introduced cultured pearls in the early 1900s, the jewel became more available and affordable.

"The King’s Gems"
The ruby, sometimes called the "King of Gems," can be traced back to ancient Sanskrit writings. The blood-red stone was believed to have healing and protective property and was worn into battle by early warriors.

Because of the rarity of a gem-quality ruby, some large rubies have sold for more than flawless diamonds.

“The Gem of Gems"
Sapphires have long been considered a royal gemstone. Traditionally, kings wore them around their necks for protection and good fortune. Perhaps because the brilliant blue stones symbolize pure and wise rulers, the British Crown Jewels contain many large sapphires.

Precious vs. semi-precious jewels
Traditionally, only rubies, diamonds, sapphires and emeralds were considered precious jewels. All other gemstones were classified as semi-precious stones. Today, howerer, many jewelers simply refer to all natural jewels as "precious." All most customers would agree: Whether they own jade or diamonds, their jewels are precious to them!
