长期以来，Times Square通常被翻译成“时代广场”，听起来也很大气开阔。这样翻译对吗？我们先来看下面这段文字：

Formerly named Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in April 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly erected Times Building, which is now called One Times Square and is the site of the annual ball drop on New Year's Eve.

Times Square前称为朗埃克广场，因《纽约时报》（The New York Times）而改名为时报广场。

《纽约时报》1851年9月18日创刊，1904年纽约时报总部在Times Square附近建立了25层大厦。《纽约时报》发行人阿道夫·奥克斯成功游说时任市长的小乔治·布林顿·麦克莱伦（George B. McClellan, Jr.）在当地设立地铁站，并在1904年4月8日将朗埃克广场正式更名为时报广场。

为了庆祝改名成功当时举办了个大型新年晚会，然后这个晚会传统就一年一年承继下来了。新年前夕纽约时报广场的降球仪式已经成为美国新年传统。每年的12月31日，在时报广场1号大厦（One Times Square Plaza）会悬挂一颗90公斤的水晶彩球。
