The first ever "Lavender Tourism Festival" officially opened over the weekend in Huocheng County of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Let's travel to the fields of purple, and take a look at the grand opening ceremony.

The first Lavender Tourism Festival kicked off last Saturday with a grand ceremony of music and dance. Officials and local residents were invited to take part. Festival activities include markets for selling lavender products and souvenirs, photograph exhibitions, a crafts designing contest, and ethnic music concerts. There are also some sports activities such as horse racing and wrestling. Meanwhile, a Lavender Museum will be opened soon.

Huocheng County of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region shares a similar latitude, climate and soil conditions with Provence of France, one of the world's famous origins of lavender. Huocheng is also considered as the largest lavender planting base in China.

An area of 30-thousand acres is used for planting, and over 95 percent of China's lavender products are made in Huocheng. So, the municipal government is committed to making lavender the main attraction for tourists from all over the world, and hope this inaugural festival will take the local scene to a new frontier.
