On September 5th, The Battle of Marne.

The assassination of Austro-Hungarian Archduke Ferdinand by a Serbian nationalist ignited a powder keg of hostilities in Europe. Germany, aligned with Austria-Hungary took up arms against Russia, which was aligned with France. Within months, Austro-German forces were marching against Russia on the east, and Belgium and France on the west. Britain jumped in to honor an old treaty with Belgium and World War I was on. In the first month, Germany advanced through Belgium on France, but on September 5, 1914, upon reaching the river Marne within striking distance of Paris, the Germans met sharp resistance from the French and British. In a fierce 6-day battle that cost half a million lives, Germany was forced to retreat and Paris was saved.
