Supreme Court says Americans have the right to own a gun anywhere they live. The ruling is disappointing Chicago officials where handguns are banned, the mayor there says law will be reworked to protect rights and residents from violence.

In the Senate, confirmation hearing began for Elena Kagan, nominated for a spot on Supreme Court. If she gets the nod, Kagan says she will consider every case impartially and with commitment to principle.

Senator Robert Byrd is remembered for his storied career, serving longer than any senator in history. The Democrat of West Virginia died at 92, his desk draped in black.

Hurricane watches for a stretch of Gulf coast in Texas and Mexico, tropical storm Alex could become a category-3 hurricane before it makes landfall later this week.
