On May 28th, 1967, Francis Chichester returned to Plymouth, England after sailing around the world solo.

7 years after being told by doctors that he had only 3 weeks left to live, 64-year-old Francis Chichester set sail on a solo voyage around world. In passing Australia and South America's Cape Horn, the lone mariner chose a lengthy and rather dangerous route. But Chichester was accustomed to challenge. 30 years earlier, he had made headlines with solo air flights from Britain to Australia, from New Zealand to Japan. After 9 months and 28,500 miles at sea, Chichester returned to Plymouth, England on May 28th, 1967. Soon after he was knighted as Sir Francis by Queen Elizabeth II. She used the samesword that Queen Elizabeth I used to knight Britain’s first global navigator Sir Francis Drake.
