The Governor of Louisiana declares a state of emergency as an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico creeps closer toward the shore, threatening wildlife. President Barack Obama says every single resource will be used to contain the spill.

Civil rights icon Dorothy Height is remembered during a funeral service in Washington. President Obama says Height lived a righteous life that changed the country for the better.

In Mexico, television cameras catch hostages being taken at gunpoint into a police car, then speeding away. The chase ended with the suspects being captured. Some 100 officers took part in the chase, much evidence folding on cameras.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin takes saving wildlife into his own hands, attaching a caller with a radio transmitter to a polar bear, also helping weigh it. Polar bears are in danger, numbers dwindling in the Arctic because of melting ice.
