Should One Expect a Reward When Doing a Good Deed

Whether or not one should expect a return for doing favors has aroused a heated debate among the public and the legal society in the past few decades.

Opinions are divided into two main groups, which will be illustrated as follows.

Some people, as well as those jurists, firmly believe that good turns really deserve a medal. It does no harm to the dignity. They reason that those who are ready to help others regardless of their own safety and benefits, if properly rewarded, will inspire more people with a sense of justice.

Undoubtedly, this viewpoint is in opposition with the traditional Chinese virtue, just as the old saying goes, "Roses given, fragrance in hand." Lei Feng, a social idol, carries out the principle in his whole life. He harvests the love and respect from others and is still followed as an example in our everyday behavior.

In my judgment, both of the beliefs stand to reason. When we help others out of trouble, we derive self-fulfillment and spiritual enhancement. Meanwhile, recognizing and honoring good deeds can be conducive to a harmonious society.
