Actor Johnny Depp has proved to be the biggest draw so far at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival as thousands of celebrity-hungry film fans flocked to see the return of their cinema hero to the French Riviera after an absence of 14 years. Meanwhile, two young rising movie stars were also awarded on Saturday.

Fans went wild for Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, stars of the latest "Pirates of the Caribbean", as they premiered the movie at the 64th Cannes Film Festival.

In this latest adventure, Jack Sparrow finds himself on a journey to the so-called Fountain of Youth, encountering not only obstacles along the way but an old flame as well.

Sparrow's old love comes in the form of a beautiful, deadly, female pirate played by Penelope Cruz.

If Cruz's femme fatale wasn't dangerous enough, Sparrow soon meets her father: the dreaded Blackbeard, played by newcomer to the series, Ian McShane.

For Depp, the Pirates franchise has turned him into one of Hollywood's highest earners. The movie is being shown in 2D as well as 3D when it's released on May the 18th.

Two young rising stars, French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey and French actor Niels Schneider, have been awarded the Chopard Prize at the Festival.

Actor Robert De Niro, was on hand to present thetrophies.

The prize, now in its tenth year, was created to recognize young talent emerging as the movie stars of tomorrow.

The festival runs to May 22.
