【短语来源】This saying, American in origin, was first recorded in 1828. It was a favourite expression of Abraham Lincoln, for whom it epitomised the American spirit of self-help; popularised in a poem by Sarah Bolton in Harper's Magazine(1854), it was finally brought into general currency when her words were set to a very popular song.
