The phone hacking scandal in Britain has claimed its first victim in the United States. Les Hinton, chief executive of the Murdoch-owned Dow Jones, and publisher of the Wall Street Journal, announced his immediate resignation on Friday.

Hinton became head of Dow Jones in December 2007. Previously, he served as chairman of Murdoch's British newspaper arm during some of the years the abuses took place.

But in 2009, he testified to a parliamentary committee that he had seen no evidence phone hacking had spread beyond a single jailed reporter, Clive Goodman.
