The line chart shows the production of main fuels in UK between 1986 and 2000.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

A glance at the line graph given reveals the trend of energy resources generated in UK from 1986 to 2000. It is evident that the petroleum yield remained the highest level during the whole period. While natural gas production experienced a burgeoning growth in the last five years of the 20th century, the output of coal decreased sharply.

In 1986, the production of petroleum and coal was almost the same at less than 120 million tons, but they witnessed two totally different trend in the following decade. Petrol output mounted to 140 million tons in 1990 before it fell to 110 in 1995, while coal plunged dramatically at first, then bounced back from 75 to nearly 100 million tons between 1990 and 1995. The production gap of these two fuels became wider since 1995, with petroleum yield rising to 130 in 2000 whereas the other reaching a low of 60 million tons.

Besides, it is interesting to note that when coal and petrol dominated the fuel production, natural gas production remained a low profile. Fluctuating at around 65 billion cubic metres for almost ten years, it rose exponentially since 1995. After gas production exceeded coal in 1996, it kept almost the same growth rate with petroleum and gained a yield of more than 100 billion cubic metres in 2000.

a burgeoning growth:    快速增长

production/output/yield: n.    产量

mount: v.   上升

plunge: v.

In most countries, with the widespread use of the Internet, people have more freedom to choose to work and study at home instead of travelling to work or college. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

The network is opening up a new possibility for people to work and study. Instead of going to office or school on a daily basis, more and more people have the chance to finish their jobs or have classes at home, and there is growing support for this option as it is supposed to be more beneficial.

One obvious merit of working or studying online at home is that workers and students do not need to waste time and money on commuting and transportation, which gives them the flexibility to arrange their timetables around their own lifestyles. After all, for most people, it is discouraging to add long traffic time and the cost involved into a hectic schedule. Moreover, employees with flexible working schedules often have higher morale for their jobs than those in a traditional office environment, which in turn benefits the business in a long run. Students who study at home are also found to be more efficient and active than those learning at school.

In addition, people who live in remote areas will benefit greatly from the equality brought by the wide use of telecommuting and web-based education. As most of large-sized and powerful corporations are mainly based in leading cities of a country, offering telecommuting options means some talented individuals who live in less popular cities can have more employment opportunities. Online learning also enables children in poor areas with underdeveloped infrastructure and few teachers to receive high-quality courses.

However, some people may harbor a concern that students or staff who have much freedom at home may not fully focus on the tasks at hand and fail to follow the arrangement. However, this potential problem could be addressed by setting proper productivity goals and conducting regular progress check-ins.

In conclusion, although this trend may be accompanied by some drawbacks, it is favorable for people to work or study online at home, considering unnecessary time and energy spent on commuting, as well as the equality for the society as whole.

hectic: adj.

morale: n.  士气

telecommuting:  n.

harbor a concern:  怀有疑虑
