今天,我们来看一下《基本演绎法》第一季第三集Child Predator  的下集。

Given the givens 这个短语平时也不是特别常见,但是口语中还是会出现的。

这个短语理解起来还是很简单的。第一个given 表示基于XXX样的情况。

第二个givens 表示的是现在手上有的进展。

两者和在一起就表示基于已有信息、在这种情况下的意思。

He wasn’t the least bit affected.这句句子中有一个词组 not the least bit

这个词组表示“一点也不”。 

那这个词组和not the least与 not in the least,有什么区别。我们来看一下。

not in the least在口语中主要表示”一点也不”“丝毫不”。

【例句】

She can’t seem to see the joke in the least. 

她似乎完全不懂这个笑话。

not the least常见于the last but not the least 中, 表示”最后,但也很重要”之意。

【例句】

The last but not the least, I am sure you will have doubts on my simple theory – trend.

 最后说一点重要的信息,很多人也许会对趋向-我的这个简单理论嗤之以鼻。

补充说明一点,the last but not the least 的含义和 last but not least 是一致的。如果是考试或者是做选择题,那肯定是用last but not least:最后但不是最不重要的一点/最后但也是很重要的一点。

Blow off steam 这个词组其实非常形象。

“blow off steam”原意为“释放一些蒸汽”。

后来就引申为“释放压力,释放被压抑的情感”。

【例句】

After fighting with his wife, he went out for a walk to blow off steam.

跟他太太吵过之后,他出去散步以泄心头之怒。
